Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying such treatments must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the way of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
