At least thirteen people perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
